Unexpected Diversity of Feeding Modes among Chisel-Mouthed Ethiopian Labeobarbus (Cyprinidae)

چکیده
Trophic resource partitioning is one of the main drivers adaptive radiation. The evolutionary diversification large African barbs, genus Labeobarbus, seems to be related mouth polymorphism. chisel-mouthed or scraping phenotype has repeatedly evolved within Labeobarbus. At least five ecomorphs with a morphology were detected in waters Ethiopian Highlands and can provisionally classified into two groups: (i) “Varicorhinus”-like, (ii) “Smiling”-like. Previously, all Labeobarbus scraping-mouth considered periphyton feeders. Using data on morphology, diet stable isotope ratios (C N), we addressed question: does predict feeding periphyton? Our study revealed that scraper exhibited three modes: periphyton-eating, herbivory–detritivory, (iii) insectivory. Two cases parallel divergence sympatric distinct modes (herbivory–detritivory vs. insectivory) geographically isolated basins. A significant difference ?15N values was among ecomorphs. periphytonophagous rich are comparable those piscivorous fish. This sheds light possibility utilization as protein-rich food by fishes.

Spawning migrations of the endemic Labeobarbus (Cyprinidae, Teleostei) species of Lake Tana, Ethiopia: status and threats.
The reproductive biology of the only known intact species flock of large cyprinids, the 16 Labeobarbus species of Lake Tana (Ethiopia), has been extensively studied for the past two decades. Seven species of Labeobarbus are known to migrate >50 km upstream into tributary rivers for spawning during the rainy season (July to October), whereas eight other species are absent from these rivers and p...
متن کاملThe Effect of Modes of Delivery on Infants' Feeding Practices
Breast feeding has a great impact on the infant morbidity and mortality. According to Pakistan Demographic and Health survey (PDHS) infant mortality rate is 78 deaths per 1,000 live births. World Health Organization recommends that exclusive breast feeding for six months can decrease infant mortality rate by one-third. The objective of the study was to find out how the mode of delivery had impa...
متن کاملHaplotype diversity and phylogenetic relationships among the Iberian barbels (Barbus, Cyprinidae) reveal two evolutionary lineages.
The phylogenetic relationships and haplotype diversity of all Iberian barbels were examined by analyzing the complete mitochondrial cytochrome b gene sequence (1141 bp) of 72 specimens from 59 Iberian localities. Phylogenetic findings demonstrated a clear distinction between two mitochondrial lineages and confirmed the existence of two previously considered subgenera: Barbus and Luciobarbus: Th...

A novel form of spliceosome, containing the minor snRNPs U11 and U12, splices a class of pre-mRNA introns with non-consensus splice sites. This unexpected spliceosome diversity has interesting implications for the evolution and expression of eukaryotic genes.
